Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s The Threequel, Part 1
Now, notice 1st Peter 5: 8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9. Therefore, resist him, steadfast in the Faith, And know that the same sufferings or attacks, are being experienced by your brethren throughout the world. 10. And may The God of all Grace, Who has called us unto His Eternal Glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect you, establish you, strengthen you, and settle you. 11. Unto Him (Christ Jesus) be the Glory and the Dominion forever and ever. Amen!
Now again, notice closely 1st Peter 5: 8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (Stop here)
Now, explain briefly a few things revealed in these verses. Vs. 8. Be sober, be vigilant. •The word ‘Be’ means to take action or now is the time for readiness.
•The word ‘Sober’ means, to be clear-headed, not impaired or unable to function.
•The word ‘Vigilant’ means, being on the alert & watch. Again vs. 8, Be sober, be vigilant. *Why so serious? *Why so urgent? *Why do I have to do this or be like this?
Now, notice this Explanation Clause.
Vs. 8. For or because. your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (Stop here)
•Notice the word ‘Your’ means, it’s personal! The devil is after you just like you are the only one. You are in The Scope of his crosshairs. You have been targeted for termination.
•Notice the word ‘Adversary’ means, an opponent. An Antagonist. An Enemy. Who is this one that is so against you? The Devil! Also known as Satan, Lucifer, the Evil One, etc.
(Question), What should we compare him to, so we can better understand the threat? He walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. A roaring lion, not just a lion, but a roaring lion! Roaring in this context means, To frighten. To intimidate. To cause anxiety or worry.
Lastly, vs. 8 says, he seeking whom he may devour! •He seeking! *A Relentless Pursuit.
*A Focused Determination. •Whom he may devour! Not just to wound, or to hurt, or to injure! But to swallow whole, to consume. to annihilate, to utterly destroy.
Now vs. 9, Therefore, resist him, steadfast in the Faith, And know that the same sufferings or attacks are being experienced by your brethren throughout the world. You’re not the only one! This is not strange or unique what you’re going through!
But now, notice again vs. 9, Therefore, resist him, HOW? Steadfast in the Faith.
Now, back on 1-12-20, we began a 9-part series that we called Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s.
And then 1 year and 2 months later in 2-7-21, we were led by The Lord to return back to this series that we called, Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s.
But this time we called it, Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s The Sequel!
And now, 4 years later. Today, 1-5-25 we are being led again by The Lord to return back to this series that we called, Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s. But this time we will call it, Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s The Threequel!
Question, What is your favorite movie Threequel, not a remake but a Threequel? I think mine’s would probably be, “Rocky Three,” which is a part of “The Rocky” movie franchise. But what is a Threequel? A Threequel is the next installment within a series coming after the first sequel.
Now, see 2nd Corinthians 2:11. Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices!
Let us not be ignorant of Satan devices, lest he should take advantage of us in the New Year and beyond. Either, with the desire to compromise. Or, with the desire to be uncommitted. Or, with the desire for carnality. Or, with the desire towards covetousness.
Now, See 2nd Corinthians 2:11. Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices!
Let us not be ignorant of Satan devices, lest he should take advantage of us in the New Year and beyond, either with the desire to compromise. Or, with the desire to be uncommitted. Or, with the desire for carnality. Or, with the desire towards covetousness.
Now, this Sunday, lets learned about the first device that Satan will uses against us, and therefore, we should not be ignorant of such matters, less the Roaring Lion should take advantage of us in The New Year And Beyond. For our adversary wants to influence us directly or indirectly either by the world, or by our flesh, or by certain relationships.
Which any One of these avenues, or a combination of such things, will bring about the desire to compromise •Our position with God. •Or, our fellowship with God. •Or, our testimony for God. •Or, our desire to be pleasing unto God!
Now, see Genesis 1:
26 Then God said Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God, He created him male and female He created them.
Now, see Genesis 2:
16 And the Lord God commanded the man saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
Now, see Genesis 3:1. Now, the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.
Now, see 2nd Corinthians 11:
3 But I fear lest somehow as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he or she who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, Or, if you receive a different spirit which you have not received. Or, a different Gospel which you have not accepted, you may well put up with it? Or why would you put up with it?
Now, see Revelation 12:9. So, the great dragon was cast out, (See later vs.7). But who really is this great dragon?
That serpent of old, Genesis 3: 1-5&14,15. He is also called, the Devil and Satan and Lucifer too. See later Isaiah 14: 12 Thru 14.
Who deceives the whole world, he was cast unto the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. See later Revelation 20: 10.
Now, see again Genesis 3: 1. Now, the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Eve, Has God indeed said unto you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, we may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;
3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, For God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die!
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die.
5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God knowing good and evil. (Note) Self Autonomy, no longer under the control of another.
6 So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes,
and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her and he ate.

Sermon Notes For 1-19-25
Now, Let’s Turn To Ephesians Chapter 5.
13 days ago on Tuesday Night January 7, 2025 Thru Thursday, January 9th our region of Southern California experienced a life-changing natural disaster, one of the severest events in California history?
Tornado like winds commonly known as the Santa Ana, blew through our region with wind gust in some places as high as 80, 90, Or 100mph. In addition, These Wild Fires began to brake out in several different places around The Los Angeles Basin.
Now, You May Also Remember that in 2018 in Northern California a small community called “Paradise,” Experienced wild fires, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history until now.
And Then on August 2023, Wildfires broke out on the island of Maui in Hawaii.
The wind-driven fires prompted evacuations and caused widespread damage, killing at least 102 people and leaving two people missing in the town of Lahaina on Maui's northwest coast. Now, There Are At Least 2 Common Questions We Either Ask Or Think Or We Do Both When Trouble, Trials, Testing, Or Tragedy Occurs!
Now, Let’s See Ephesians 5:17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what The Will of the Lord is.
Now, Let’s Consider Our First Matter Understanding God’s Will During Times Of Trouble!
Now, See James 1:
2 My brethren count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Now, Let’s Consider Our Second Matter Understanding God’s Will During Times Of Trials!
See 2nd Corinthians 12:
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.
8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.
9 And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Now, Let’s Consider Our Third Matter Understanding God’s Will During Times Of Testing!
Now, See 1st Corinthians 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; *but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
*but with the temptation will also make the way of escape *that you may be able to bear it.
Now, Let’s Consider Our Fourth And Final Matter) Understanding God’s Will During Times Of Or Tragedy!
Now, See Psalms 46:
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear*even though the earth be removed, *And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 *Though it’s waters roar and be troubled, *Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
7 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in
the earth!
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Now, Close With 2nd Peter 3:
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
10 However, the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and
the works that are in it will be burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Sermon Notes For 1-26-25 Part 2. Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s, The Threequel
Now, let’s turn to 1st Peter Chapter. Now, 100 years ago in the United States this country by the end of 1925 was 5 years into a unique & exuberant decade that became known as, “The Roaring 20’s.”And for many the decade of the 1920’s was a time as nation to reject or abandon the traditional moral standards and Biblical family values of that time, so in order that they could embrace, •Extravagance. •Self-Indulgence. •Immorality. •Self-Centeredness.
•And worst of all, many would embrace an atheistic or agnostic world view. Interestingly, during this period from 1920 to 1929 in most of the northern cities of United States, they saw a economic boom which was due to a robust manufacturing sector. •for example, certain major companies were dealt with, *oil wells. *Or steal mills. *Or mining production. • Other major companies were dealt with, the newly formed automotive industries like, Ford & GM. •Still other companies were dealt with the Railroad industries like, the Cross Country Southern Pacific Railroads. • Or some dealing with the Maritime Shipping Industries who were exporting or importing around the world. •And finally, some companies were dealing with the investment industries like, the New York Stock Exchange. As they handling the many savvy Investors from around the world at that time, who wanting a piece of the pie that was taking place at this time in the United States.
But unfortunately, in October of 1929 and for the next 10years, there would be a great economic collapse that was called, “The Great Depression!” And for most Americans of every racial group during this time they faced various challenges and hardships which affected millions of people across the Country, especially those who lived in the South or the Midwest part of the United States were hit hard.
Now, let’s notice 1st Peter 5: 8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.9. Therefore, resist him, steadfast in the Faith, and know that the same sufferings or attacks, are being experienced by your brethren throughout the world.
Now, again notice closely 1st Peter 5: 8. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (Stop here)
Now, let’s see 2nd Corinthians 2:1.1 Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices or schemes! •Compromise. •Uncommitted. •Carnality. •Covetousness.
Compromise! We did on the first Sunday, January 5, 2025. Now, this Sunday, let’s expose another device that Satan will uses against us, and therefore we should not be ignorant of such matters, less The Roaring Lion should take advantage of us in this new year and beyond.
Listen, our adversary wants to influence us directly or indirectly either by, •the world, •or by our flesh, •or by certain relationships which we choose to have.
And again, any one of these are, •the world, •our flesh, •or certain relationships which we choose to have, or a combination of such things, could bring about the desire to be “Uncommitted,” •In our position With God. •Or In our fellowship with God. •Or regarding our testimony for God. •Or, regarding our desire to be pleasing unto god!
Now, see Luke 9 57 Now, it happened as they journeyed on the road that someone said unto Jesus, Lord I will follow You wherever You go! 58 But Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. 59 Then Jesus said unto another person, Follow Me. But they said to Jesus, Lord let me first go and bury my father. 60 But Jesus said unto them, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God. 61 Lastly, another person also said unto Jesus, Lord I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell unto those who are of my household! 62 But Jesus said unto them, No one having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
In fact, see Matthew 10: 34. Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father. •A daughter against her mother. •And a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law! 36 And a man's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Therefore, the one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And the one who does not take their cross and follow after Me, they are not worthy of Me. 39 The one who finds their life will lose it! But the one who loses their life for My sake will find it!
Now, let’s see Luke 9 23 Then our Lord Jesus said unto them all, If anyone desires to come after Me, follow me! *Let them deny themselves, *and take up their cross daily,*and follow Me. 24 For or because, whoever desires to save their life will lose it! But whoever loses their life for My sake will save it 25 For what does it profit a person if they gain the whole world, and then they themselves are destroyed or perish, Or they are lost?
Sermon Notes For 2-05-25 Part 3. Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s, The Threequel
Now, let’s turn to 1st Peter Chapter 5.
Now, let’s notice again this Sunday, 1st Peter 5: 8, Be sober, Be vigilant; Because your Adversary the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (Stop here)
Now, let’s also see 2nd Corinthians 2:11. Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not or we must not be ignorant of his devices or schemes!
Now remember, in this Decade of the 20’s, our Adversary will attempt to influence you and I regularly in the areas of, •Compromise. •Uncommitted. •Carnality. •Covetousness.
And last Sunday, we saw this matter regarding how our Adversary will attempt to influence you and I in the area of being Uncommitted! Carnality.
Now, this Sunday, let’s expose another device that Satan will use against us, and therefore we should not be ignorant of such matters, less the roaring lion should take advantage of us in this new year and beyond.
Listen. aur Adversary wants to influence us directly or indirectly either by, •the world, •or by our flesh, •or by certain relationships which we choose to have.
And again, any one of these have •the world, •our flesh, •or certain relationships which we choose to have, or a combination of such things could bring about “ Carnality.”
Now, see 1st Corinthians 3:1 And I brethren could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?
Now, see Romans 8: 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Now, see 2nd Timothy 4: 9. Be diligent to come unto me quickly; 10. For Demas has forsaken me, (Why?) Having loved this present world and has departed for Thessalonia. Crescens for Galatia. Titus for Dal-ma-tia. (Who Is Demas?)
(Note) Philemon 1: 23 Epaphras my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus greets you, 24 As do Mark, Aris-tar-chus, Demas, And Luke, my fellow laborers.
Now, see Luke 8: 11 Now the parable is this: (See later Luke8: 4 -8. The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while, but in times of temptation fall away. 14 Now, the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
Now, see Galatians 5: 16 I say then walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Sermon Notes 2-9-25 Part 4 Beware Of The Roaring Lion, During These Roaring 20s, The Threequel
Now, let’s turn to 1st Peter Chapter 5.
Now, let’s notice again this Sunday 1st Peter 5: 8. Be sober, be vigilant; Because your adversary the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (Stop here)
Now, let’s also see 2nd Corinthians 2:11. Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not, or we must not be Ignorant of his devices or schemes!
Now, remember In this decade of the 20’s, our adversary will attempt to influence you and I regularly in the areas of, Compromise. Uncommitted. Carnality. Covetousness.
Now, last Sunday we saw how our adversary will attempt to influence you and I in the area of Carnality!
Now, Let’s turn to Colossians Chapter 3.
Now, this Sunday, let’s expose another potential scheme that Satan will use against us, and therefore we should not be ignorant of such matters less the Roaring Lion should take advantage of us in this new year and beyond.
For our adversary wants to influence us directly or indirectly either by, •the world system,
•or by our fleshy nature, •or by certain relationships which we choose to have. And any one of these avenues, •the world, •our flesh, •or certain relationships which we choose to have, or a combination of such things could bring about “Covetousness.”
Now, let’s notice Colossians 3: 5. Therefore, put to death your members which are upon the earth: (Stop here)
Now, see Galatians 5:
24. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
16. I say then walk in The Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
19. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20. idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, (jealousies), outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
21. envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom
of God.
Now, let’s notice again Colossians 3: 5. Therefore, put to death your members which are upon the earth: •fornication, •uncleanness, •passion, •evil desire, •and Covetousness, which is idolatry. (Stop here)
(Note) Idolatry is, the placing of someone or something as a replacement for another (God)
to whom we are supposed to be committed unto.
Now, let’s see Exodus 20: 17. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey,
nor anything that is your neighbor’s!
Covet, Covetous, Covetousness is an intense craving, an obsession, or a uncontrollable desire,
to possess, to have, to want something or someone, especially when it belongs to someone else.
Such things as, fame, wealth, material possessions, physical beauty, physical attractiveness,
Athletic abilities, skills talents, Other abilities, popularity, position, power, Authority.
Now, see Isaiah 14:
12. How you are fallen from heaven O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground you who weakened the nations!
13. For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;
14. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds I will be like the Most High.
(Quote Genesis 3:)
5. The serpent is speaking to Eve said, For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
6. So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes,
and it was a tree desirable to make one wise. she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
Now, let’s see The Gospel of Mark 7:
21. For from within out of the heart of men proceed, •evil thoughts, •adulteries, •fornications, •murders,
22. •thefts, •Covetousness, •wickedness, •deceit, •lewdness, •an evil eye, •blasphemy, •pride,
•foolishness.
23. And all these evil things come from Within and defile a man or a woman.
Now, See Luke 12: 15. And Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of Covetousness,
(WHY) For One’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he or she possesses.
Joshua 7:
19 Now Joshua said to Achan My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.
*20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done:
*21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, And I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the ground in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24 Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said, Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day. So, all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
26 Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So, the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore, the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.
Now, see 2nd Kings 5: 1-27
15 And Naaman returned to the man of God, he and all his aides, and came and stood before him; and he said Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel;
now therefore, please take a gift from your servant.
16 But Elisha said, As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will receive nothing. And Naaman urged Elisha to take it, but Elisha refused.
17 So Naaman said, Then, if not, please let your servant be given two mule-loads of earth; for your servant will no longer offer either burnt offering or sacrifice to other gods, but to the Lord.
21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman, and when Naaman saw him running after him, Naaman got down from the chariot and said, Is all well?
22 And Gehazi said, All is well. But my master Elisha has sent me to say unto you, indeed just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the mountains of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.
23 So Naaman said, Please take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments and handed them to two of his servants; and they carried them on ahead of him.
24 When he came to the citadel, he took them from their hand and stored them away in the house; then he let the men go, and they departed.
25 Now he went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him, Where did you go, Gehazi?"
And he said, Your servant did not go anywhere.
26 Then he said to him, "Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?
27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever. And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.
Now, see The Gospel of John 12:
3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, And She anointed the feet of Jesus,
and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
4 Then one of Jesus own disciples, Judas Iscariot Simon's son, who would betray Jesus said,
5 Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given unto the poor?
6 But this Judas said not because that he cared for the poor, but because Judas was a thief!
And Judas had the money box or container, and Judas used to take what was put in it.
Now, let’s see 1st Timothy 6:
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and clothing with these things we shall be content.
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Sermon Notes For 2-16-25 For 1st Timothy 3: 2-13, Part 4.
Now, let’s turn to 1st Timothy Chapter 3 and let’s come back to our series that we entitled in 2024, “Becoming That Person Who Is Regularly Involved In Discipling, Or Spiritually Mentoring Another For Christ. Amen!
Now, as we continue in this new year of 2025 and beyond, let’s remember that our objective is still the same even though from time to time as The Lord would lead us, we will break away from this particular topic in order to focus upon a different topic or subject that the lord would have us to know.
For example, in the month of April of 2025, we will return back to our ongoing series regarding The Bodily Resurrection Of Our Lord Jesus Christ From The Dead And Why It So Important To Know What You Believe And Why?
But today, with God’s help, we are returning back to another important matter revealed unto us here in 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13, where we are faced with an important question that someone will have when it comes to this section of 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13. (Stop Here)
(Question) Are these Godly character traits that are mentioned here in 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13. Should such things be evident for both males and females in the ministry, or, for both males and females who serve within a local Church Ministry. So that we as God’s people we should expect, and require and see in operation within their lives first even before they start ministering or serving, or does it really matter? (Repeat)
Now, let’s notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3:
2 A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded,
of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
3 Not given unto wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4 One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence.
5 for or because if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?
6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he falls into the same condemnation as the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among Those who are outside the Church. Lest he falls into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money,
9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.
10 But let These Deacons also be tested first. Then let them serve as Deacons being found blameless.
11 Likewise their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things.
12 Let Deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. (Stop here)
Unfortunately, today, most Christians value or highly esteem a person who as talents or skills,
more than the person who has character and integrity.
Most Christians value or highly esteem a person who is attractive and well dressed, more than the person who has character and integrity.
Most Christians value or highly esteem a person who has achieved academically and has much experience, more than the person who has character and integrity.
Finally, most Christians value or highly esteem a person who is successful and affluent, more than the person who has character and integrity. And by the way, what do i mean by the character of someone? What is character all about?
Maybe this would help. Character has been defined as, the moral qualities and the ethical traits that mark a person. Such As, empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty.
Character is the moral qualities and the ethical traits that determine in a person’s life
a right response regardless of the situation, or circumstances.
Now, turn to Romans Chapter 5.
Now, let’s see Romans 5:
3 And not only that, but we also glory or rejoice in Tribulations, WHY? Knowing that tribulation produces perseverance or resilience;
4 And perseverance or resilience, experience or character; and character, hope.
5 Now, hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by The Holy Spirit who was given unto us. (Stop here)
Now, let’s go back to 1st Timothy Chapter 3.
(Question) Are these Godly character traits that are mentioned here in 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13. Should such things be evident for both males and females in the ministry, or, for both males and females who serve within a local Church Ministry. So that we as God’s people we should expect, and require and see in operation within their lives first, even before they start ministering or serving, or does it really matter? (Repeat)
Now, let’s notice 1st Timothy 3:2. A Bishop then must be blameless, (Stop here)
Now, you might recall starting in the middle of November 2024 to the first Sunday in December 2024. For 3 Sundays in a row with Gods help, we learn together about 1st Timothy 3:1.
Now, notice 1st Timothy 3:1. This is a faithful saying, if a man desires the position or office of a Bishop, he desires a good work. (Stop here)
Also, see Titus 1:
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint Elders in every city as I commanded you
6 If a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination.
7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered,
not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money. (Stop Here)
Now, see Ephesians 4:
8 Therefore, He says when He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts
unto men.
11 And He Himself gave some to be, Apostles, some to be Prophets, some to be Evangelists,
and some to be pastors and teachers, (Stop here)
Now, let’s notice again 1st Timothy 3:2. A Bishop then must be blameless above reproach.
In what ways does he show himself blameless, above reproach?
First in the area of his marriage with his spouse and with his children, because he is a genuine family man, an authentic family guy. Show you what I mean.
2 A Bishop then must be blameless above reproach, the husband of one wife, or the husband to one wife!
4 One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence.
5 for or because if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?
Now, also see 1st Timothy 3:12. Let Deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. (Stop here)
2 A Bishop then must be blameless above reproach, the husband of one wife, or the husband to one wife! (Stop here) He is not to be, •A Polygamist, think of Solomon! •An Adulterer, think of David! •A Womanizer, think of Samson!
Now, let’s see Ephesians 5:
25 Husbands love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27 that He might present her to Himself a Glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as the Lord does the church.
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery that I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Now, see 1st Peter 3:7. Husbands likewise, dwell with them your wives with understanding.
Giving honor unto the wife as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Now, see again 1st Timothy 3:
2 A Bishop then must be blameless above reproach, the husband of one wife, or the husband to one wife!
4 One who rules his own house well, or give leadership to, having his children in submission with all reverence.
5 for or, because if a man does not know how to rule give leadership to his own house or home, how will he take care of the church of God?
Now, see again, 1st Timothy 3:4. One who rules his own house well, or give leadership to,
having his children in submission with all reverence.
Now, see Ephesians 6:4. And you fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of The Lord.
Now, see Malachi 4:
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
6 And he will turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the hearts of the children unto their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.
Sermon Notes For 3-2-25 For 1st Timothy 3: 1-13, Part 6.
Now, let’s turn to 1st Timothy Chapter 3. Now, let’s continue with our current series that we entitled, “Becoming That Person Who Is Regularly Involved In Discipling, Or Spiritually Mentoring Another For Christ. Amen!
Now, with God’s help, lets continue to work our way through 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13, because someone whom you or i may be discipling or spiritually mentoring, They will most likely have some questions when it comes to this section of 1st Timothy Chapter 3, And Verses 2 Thru 13.
Questions like, does character matter? Does my character really matter? And why does character matter so much?
Now, let’s turn again to Romans Chapter 5 for a moment. And let’s see Romans 5:3 And not only that, but we also glory or rejoice in Tribulations, WHY?
Knowing that Tribulation produces Perseverance; Or Resilience or Resiliency.*4 And Perseverance; Or Resilience; or Resiliency; produces experience or character; or proven character. And proven character produces hope.5 Now, Hope does not disappoint, because the Love of God has been poured out in our hearts by The Holy Spirit Who was given unto us. (Stop here)
Now, let’s go back to 1st Timothy Chapter 3.
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3: 2 A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 Not given unto wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. 5 for or because if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover, he must have a good testimony among those who are outside the Church lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Likewise Deacons, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these the Deacons also be tested first. Then let them serve as Deacons being found blameless. 11 Likewise their wives must be *reverent, *not slanderers, but *temperate, *faithful in all things. 12 Let Deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. (Stop here)
Hopefully, you are personally taking the time, making time to look at & compare other English Translations of the Bible regarding 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13.
Hopefully, you are personally taking the time, making time to do your own word study of these words or phrases here in 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13.
Because in order to understand 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13 correctly, that is what it is saying and not saying! And what it is for and what it is not for!
At least these next 4 questions must be asked and answered when studying 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13.
The first question, Is your character congruent when it comes to your family life and your marital life according to the Scriptures?
The second question, Is your character congruent when it comes to your personal or private life according to the Scriptures?
The third question, Is your character congruent when it comes to your public or social life according to the Scriptures?
And finally, the forth question, is your character congruent with your beliefs and practices when it comes to the Scriptures?
And by the way, the word “Congruent” can mean, That which matches or is in agreement with something else. An example, when Gears in a motor mesh together. A good Synonym for “Congruent” would be Fitting!
Once again at least 4 questions must be asked and answered when studying 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 2 thru 13.
The first question, Is your character congruent when it comes to your family life and your marital life according to the Scriptures?
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3: 2 A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife. 4 One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. 5 for or because if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God. 12 Let Deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Now, the second question, Is your character congruent when it comes to your personal or private life according to the Scriptures?
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3: 2 A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 Not given unto wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 8 Likewise Deacons, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money,
(The third question), Is your character congruent when it comes to your public or social life according to the Scriptures?
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3: 7 Moreover, he must have a good testimony among those who are outside the Church. Lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 10 But let these the deacons also be tested first. Then let them serve as Deacons being found blameless.
And the fourth and finally question, Is your character congruent with your beliefs and practices when it comes to the Scriptures?
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3: 2 A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, *able to teach and teachable! 6 Not a novice, a newly convert one who has not been tested! Why? Lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 8 Likewise deacons, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, *9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.
Now, notice (NKJV) 1st Timothy 3:10 But let these the Deacons also be tested first. Then let them serve as Deacons being found blameless.1 1 Likewise their wives must be *reverent, *not slanderers, but *temperate, *faithful in all things. (Stop here)
Now, see Romans 16: 1 I commend unto you Phoebe our sister who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea, 12 that you may receive her in The Lord in a manner worthy of the saints and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for or because indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.

Now, let’s turn to 1st Timothy Chapter 3. Now, let’s return back to our current series that we have entitled, “Becoming That Person Who Is Regularly Involved In Discipling Or Spiritually Mentoring Another For Christ.”
Now, when the time comes and you or I are discipling or spiritually mentoring another for Christ, and that person begins to ask certain questions when it comes to 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verses 1 thru 16, hopefully we will be better prepared so that we can better address and explain this important section in God’s Word.
Now, with God’s help, lets finish up 1st Timothy Chapter 3, and verse 16. Now, let’s notice 1st Timothy 3: 16B, the part which says Justified By The Spirit! Now, 2 Sundays ago I said something incorrectly from my notes that I want to correct. It’s a small thing, but it’s important.
Now, on Sunday March The 9th, I said this from my notes. From this next phrase we have here another divine statement, another Biblical Creed for all the ages that speaks to the vindication of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ on at least 3 separate occasions.
First, our Lord was truly vindicated (after) his wilderness temptation by the devil. Note Matthew 3: 16&17. Actually, I should have said, first, our Lord was truly vindicated before and not after, but before his wilderness temptation by the Devil.
And the reason why we know it was before and not after his temptation by the devil in the wilderness, is because our Lord Was vindicated at the time of His unique one-of-a-kind baptism, mentioned in Matthew 3: 16&17 which took place before His temptation by the devil in the wilderness.
Ok. now, let’s move on, and lets notice 1st Timothy 3: 16B. “Seen By Angels,” (Stop here)
Now, from this next phrase, seen by angels, we have another Divine statement, we have another Biblical Creed for all the ages that speaks to the angelic earthly observance of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ on at least 3 separate occasions.
First, our Lord was truly observed by angels after His virgin birth. (Repeat)
Now, see the Gospel of Luke 2: 7 And (she) Mary brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. *9 And behold, and An Angel of the Lord stood before the Shepherds, and the Glory of The Lord shined around them, and the shepherds were greatly afraid. *13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, and goodwill toward men!
Now, the second occasion when our Lord was observed by angels was after his temptation by the devil. (Repeat)
Now, see The Gospel of Matthew 4: 8 And Again the devil took our Lord Jesus upon an exceedingly high mountain and showed our Lord all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And the devil said unto our Lord Jesus, All these things I will give to You if You would fall down and worship me! 10 Then Jesus said unto the devil, Away with you Satan! For it is written, You shall worship The Lord your God and Him only you shall serve!* 11 Then the devil left our Lord, and behold Angels came and they ministered or served our Lord.
Now, this third occasion when our Lord was observed by angels was during His Bodily Resurrection from the dead.
Now, let’s see Matthew 28: 1 Now after the Sabbath as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for An angel of The Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat on it. 3 And this angel’s countenance was like lightning and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of the angel of the Lord and became like dead men. 5 But the angel of the Lord answered and said unto the women. Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.6 He is not here, for He is risen as He said! Come see the place where The Lord lay.
Now, let’s go back to 1st Timothy 3: 16B. Now, notice 1st Timothy 3:16B. Preached among the Gentiles, (Stop here)
Now, from this next phrase “Preached Among the Gentiles,” we have another Divine statement. We have another Biblical Creed for all the ages regarding the disciples of the past, and of the present, and of the future, how they would be unwavering in their proclamation of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ unto the whole world to both jews and gentiles!
Now, let’s see 1st Timothy 2:7. For which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle, I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying. I am a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Now, let’s see some more things regarding the Disciples of the past, and of the present, and of the future, how they would be unwavering in their proclamation of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ unto the whole world to both Jews and Gentiles!
Now, let’s see Ephesians 3:8. To me who am less than the least of all the saints, yet this Grace was given unto me that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
And lastly, let’s see Acts 9:15. But The Lord Jesus said unto Ananias, you go anyway because Saul of Tarsus is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear or preach My Name before the Gentiles, before Kings, and before the children of Israel.
Now, let’s go back to Timothy 3: 16B. Now, notice 1st Timothy 3:16B. Believed upon in the world. (Stop here)
Now, from this next phrase believed upon in the world, we have another Divine statement. We have another Biblical Creed for all the ages that speaks to the global acceptance by some of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ!
Now, let’s see 1st Timothy 1:15. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
Now, let’s see some more things about the global acceptance by some of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ!
Now, let’s see The Gospel of John 1: 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, But the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him either. 12 But as many as received Him, Lambanō: To receive what is offered. To receive and not to refuse or reject. To receive a person, give them access to oneself. To them He gave the right to become Children of God Unto those who believe in His Name!
And lastly, let’s see The Gospel of John 3: 16 For God so loved the world that He (The Father) gave His only begotten Son, So that whoever believes in Him, The So should-not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God (The Father) did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, But that the world through Him (The Son) might be Saved.
Now, let’s go back to Timothy 3: 16B. Now, notice 1st Timothy 3:16B. Received up into Glory. (Stop here)
Now, from this last and final phrase received up into Glory we have one more Divine statement. We have one more Biblical Creed for all the ages that speaks to the eternal exaltation of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ!
Now, let’s see Luke 24: 49 Behold I send the promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. 50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. *51 Now it came to pass while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into Heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
Now, let’s see Acts 1: 8 Our Lord Jesus is speaking, But you shall receive power when The Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the end of the earth. 9 Now when Our Lord Jesus had spoken these things, while the Disciples watched Him,He was taken up and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while The Disciples looked steadfastly toward heaven as The Lord Jesus went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 And they said, men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into Heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into Heaven.
Now, let’s see some more things about the eternal exaltation of God The Son, our Lord Jesus Christ! Now, let’s see Hebrews 1: 2 Has in these last days spoken to us by His Son whom He (The Father) has appointed heir of all things. Through whom also He (The Son) made the worlds. 3 Who (The Son) being the brightness of His Glory and the express image of His person (The Father). And upholding all things by the word of His power, when He (The Son) had by Himself purged our sins. (Stop Here)
(Note) These next several words that are coming up, Will give us some insight Into what happened after The Son ascended into Heaven, And then how He would take His rightful place beside God The Father In The Throne Room Which is in Heaven. 3 Who (The Son) being the brightness of His Glory and the express image of His person (The Father). And upholding all things by the word of His power, when He (The Son) had by Himself purged our sins. And sat down at the right hand of The Majesty on High. 8 But unto the Son He (The Father) says: Your throne O God is forever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God has anointed You With The oil of gladness more than Your companions. 13 But to which of The Angels has (He) The Father ever said, sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool!
And lastly, let’s see Philippians 2: 9. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him (the name) which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, Unto The Glory of God The Father.

1 Timothy 3:16. The phrase the mystery of godliness, found in 1 Timothy 3:16, is part of an introduction to an ancient hymn. In the English Standard Version, the verse reads this way: “Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.” Other translations speak of “the mystery from which true godliness springs” (NIV) and “the great mystery of our faith” (NLT). The words that follow in 1 Timothy 3:16 explain the mystery of godliness: God became flesh and lived among us (cf. John 1:1, 14).
The Greek word musterion (“mystery”), when used in the New Testament, refers to the things of God that were once hidden but were later revealed through Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). A mystery is that which can only be known through the revelation of God (Romans 16:25–26; Colossians 1:26–27). It is something that in times past had been hidden but is now revealed to God’s people. Jesus spoke of “the mystery of the kingdom of God” (Mark 4:11, NAS) that He was at that time revealing to His disciples. The apostle Paul used the word mystery 21 times in his epistles: the mystery of God (Colossians 2:2), the mystery of faith (1 Timothy 3:9), the mystery of iniquity (2 Thessalonians 2:7), etc. In each case, the “mystery” involved a declaration of spiritual truth, revealed by God through divine inspiration. The New English Translation of 1 Timothy 3:16 speaks of the mystery of godliness as an “amazing revelation” concerning our faith.
The Greek word translated “godliness” in most English translations means “a proper response to the things of God, which produces obedience and righteous living.” As He walked this earth, Jesus was the embodiment of pure godliness, which led Him to lay down His life for unworthy sinners (John 10:18). His life was dedicated to the glory of the Father, and He always did what pleased Him (John 8:29). Christians pursue godliness when we follow the example of Jesus in dedicating every decision to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Godliness is not a suggestion; it is a command (1 Peter 1:15–16; Hebrews 12:14).
The mystery of godliness is the heart of the Christian faith. The hymn that Paul records in 1 Timothy 3:16 contains a summation of Jesus’ ministry. The godliness of God’s Son is now to be reflected in us. Christianity is not a system of rules and actions that must be performed to appease a deity. At the heart of Christianity is the mystery of godliness—the fact that God took on human flesh to live among the people He created (Philippians 2:5–11). As a Son, Jesus remained completely obedient to His Father in heaven and then offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice in our place (John 10:18; Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21). God then raised Him from the dead, thereby conquering death for all who trust in Him (Matthew 28:6; 1 Corinthians 15:3–7, 13–14, 55). Because Jesus took our place, sinful humans may be declared righteous before God and be “born again” (John 3:3). The new birth is spiritual and results in a change of heart that produces true godliness (2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 John 3:8–10). How a life is transformed is the mystery of godliness and is comprehended only through the revelation of God in Christ. “Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great” (1 Timothy 3:16).
1 Timothy 3:16.
By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great:
This phrase introduces a universally acknowledged truth within the early Christian community. The "mystery of godliness" refers to the profound and previously hidden truth of God's plan for salvation through Jesus Christ. In biblical terms, a "mystery" is something that was once concealed but is now revealed by God. The greatness of this mystery underscores its significance in the Christian faith, emphasizing the transformative power of the gospel. This aligns with other New Testament passages that speak of the mystery of Christ (Ephesians 3:4-6, Colossians 1:26-27)
He appeared in the flesh,
This phrase affirms the incarnation of Jesus Christ, a foundational doctrine of Christianity. It emphasizes that Jesus, who is divine, took on human nature and lived among humanity. This is supported by John 1:14, which states, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." The incarnation is central to understanding Jesus' role as the mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5) and fulfills Old Testament prophecies such as Isaiah 7:14, which speaks of a virgin bearing a son called Immanuel, meaning "God with us."
Was vindicated by the Spirit,
This refers to the Holy Spirit's role in affirming Jesus' divine nature and mission. The Spirit's vindication is most clearly seen in the resurrection of Jesus, as Romans 1:4 states that Jesus was "declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead." The Spirit's work in Jesus' life, from His baptism (Matthew 3:16) to His resurrection, confirms His identity and mission.
Was seen by angels,
Angels played a significant role in the life and ministry of Jesus. They announced His birth (Luke 2:9-14), ministered to Him after His temptation (Matthew 4:11), and were present at His resurrection (Matthew 28:2-7). The presence of angels highlights the heavenly affirmation of Jesus' work and the cosmic significance of His mission. This phrase also suggests the spiritual realm's acknowledgment of Jesus' authority and victory.
Was proclaimed among the nations,
This highlights the spread of the gospel beyond the Jewish community to the Gentiles, fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). The early church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, took the message of Jesus to various parts of the Roman Empire and beyond, as seen in the missionary journeys of Paul and others in the Book of Acts. This proclamation among the nations signifies the universal scope of salvation through Christ.
Was believed in throughout the world,
The early church experienced rapid growth as people from diverse backgrounds came to faith in Jesus Christ. This global belief is a testament to the power of the gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit in drawing people to Christ. The phrase reflects the fulfillment of prophecies such as Isaiah 49:6, which speaks of God's salvation reaching the ends of the earth. It also underscores the transformative impact of the gospel message across different cultures and societies.
Was taken up in glory.
This refers to the ascension of Jesus into heaven, as recorded in Acts 1:9-11. The ascension marks the completion of Jesus' earthly ministry and His exaltation at the right hand of the Father (Ephesians 1:20-21). It signifies His authority and ongoing intercessory work for believers (Hebrews 7:25). The ascension also anticipates His return, as the angels told the disciples that Jesus would come back in the same way they saw Him go into heaven.
Persons / Places / Events 1. Jesus Christ Central to this verse, Jesus is the one who "appeared in the flesh" and was "taken up in glory." His life, death, and resurrection are the foundation of the Christian faith. 2. The Spirit The Holy Spirit is involved in the vindication of Jesus, affirming His divine nature and mission 3. Angels Spiritual beings who witnessed Jesus' life and ministry, emphasizing the heavenly acknowledgment of His work. 4. Nations Refers to the global proclamation of the Gospel, highlighting the universal scope of Jesus' mission. 5. The World Represents humanity's response to Jesus, as He was "believed on in the world," indicating the spread and acceptance of the Gospel message.
Teaching Points The Mystery of Godliness The term "mystery" in the Greek refers to a divine truth revealed by God. The mystery of godliness centers on the person and work of Jesus Christ, which is foundational to Christian faith and practice.
The Incarnation Jesus' appearance in the flesh underscores the importance of the incarnation. It is a reminder of God's willingness to enter human history and experience life as we do, providing a model for humility and service.
The Role of the Holy Spirit The Spirit's vindication of Jesus highlights the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in affirming truth and empowering believers. We are called to rely on the Spirit for guidance and strength in our daily walk.
The Global Mission The proclamation among the nations challenges believers to participate in the Great Commission. We are called to share the Gospel with others, both locally and globally, as part of our commitment to Christ.
The Response of Faith Belief in Jesus is not just intellectual assent but involves a transformative relationship. Our faith should be evident in our actions, reflecting the reality of Christ's lordship in our lives.
1 Timothy 3:16. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers (16) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness.--"And is not simply copulative, but heightens the force of the predication, Yes, confessedly great is the mystery" (Ellicott)--for the glorious truth which the Church of God pillar-like upholds, is none other than that stupendous mystery, in other ages not made known, but then revealed--the mystery of Christ, in all His loving manifestations and glorious triumph. Yes, confessedly great--so great that the massive grandeur of the pillar is only in proportion to the truth it supports.
God was manifest in the flesh.--Here, in the most ancient authorities, the word "God" does not occur. We must, then, literally translate the Greek of the most famous and trustworthy MSS. as follows: He who was manifested in the flesh. In the later MSS., and in the great majority of the fathers who cite the passage, we certainly find Theos ("God"), as in the Received text. The substitution can be traced to no special doctrinal prejudice, but is owing, probably, to a well-meant correction of early scribes. At first sight, Theos ("God") would be a reading easier to understand, and grammatically more exact; and in the original copies, the great similitude between ?C ("God")--the contracted form in which ?EOC was written--and the relative ?C ("He who"), would be likely to suggest to an officious scribe the very trifling alteration necessary for the easier and apparently more accurate word. Recent investigations have shown, however, beyond controversy that the oldest MSS., with scarcely an exception, contain the more difficult reading, ?C ("He who"). The Greek pronoun thus rendered is simply a relative to an omitted but easily-inferred antecedent--viz., Christ. Possibly the difficulty in the construction is due to the fact of the whole verse being a fragment of an ancient Christian hymn, embodying a confession of faith, well known to, and perhaps often sung by, the faithful among the congregations of such cities as Ephesus, Corinth, and Rome--a confession embodying the grand facts of the Incarnation and the Resurrection, the preaching of the cross to, and its reception by, the Gentile world, and the present session of Christ in glory. In the original Greek the rhythmical, as well as the antithetical character, of the clauses is very striking. In the English translation they can hardly be reproduced:-- "Who was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, as preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up into glory." Fragments of similar hymns to Christ are found in 2Timothy 2:11, and perhaps also in Ephesians 5:14.
Pulpit Commentary Verse 16. - He who for God, A.V. and T.R.; manifested for manifest, A.V.; among the nations for unto the Gentiles, A.V.; in for into, A.V. Without controversy (ὁμολογουμένως); only here in the New Testament, but used in the same sense in the LXX. and in classical Greek, "confessedly," by common confession. Great is the mystery of godliness. This is said to enhance the glory of the Church just spoken of, to whom this mystery has been entrusted, and so still further to impress upon Timothy the vital necessity of a wise and holy walk in the Church. The mystery of godliness is all that truth which "in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit." Godliness (τῆς εὐδεβείας); i.e." the Christian faith;" what in 1 Timothy 6:3 is called "The words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness (τῇ κατ αὐσεβείαν διδασκαλὶᾳ)," and in 2 Timothy 1:1, "The truth which is according to godliness." In ver. 9 it is "the mystery of the faith, where ἠ πίστις is equivalent to ἡαὐσεβεία. Bishop Ellicott, however, does not admit this objective sense of ἡ πίστις ορ ἡ αὐσεβεία but explains the genitive as "a pure possessive genitive," the mystery appertaining to, or the property of, subjective faith and godliness; but this is a use not borne out b- any passage in which the word "mystery" occurs. It is always mysteries (or mystery) of the kingdom of God, of Christ, of God, of the gospel, and the like. In the following passages the objective sense of ἠ πίστις is either necessary or by far the most natural: Acts 3:7; Acts 13:8; Acts 14:22; Acts 16:5; Galatians 1:23; Ephesians 4:5; Philippians 1:27; Colossians 1:23; Colossians 2:7; 1 Timothy 1:19; 1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Timothy 6:10, 21; 2 Timothy 4:7; Titus 1:13; James 2:1; Jude 1:3. Having thus exalted the "mystery of godliness," St. Paul goes on to expound it. He who (ὅς). This is generally adopted now as the true reading, instead of Θεός (ΟΣ, instead of ΘΣ). Bishop Ellicott satisfied himself, by most careful personal examination, that the original reading of the Cod. Alex. was ΟΣ, and that it had been altered by a later hand to ΘΣ. The Cod. Sinait certainly has ὅς, and to this all the older versions agree. The Vulgate has quod, agreeing with sacramentum and representing the Greek ὁ Accepting this, then, as the true reading, we proceed to explain it. Ὅς, who, is a relative, and must, therefore, have an antecedent. But there is no expressed antecedent of the masculine gender for it to agree with. The antecedent, therefore, must be understood, and gathered from the preceding words, τὸ μυστήριον τῆς εὐσεβείας. It can only be Christ. The mystery of the whole Old Testament, that which was wrapped in types and hidden under veils, was Christ (Colossians 1:27). Moses spake of him, the Psalms speak of him, the prophets speak of him; but all of them spake darkly. But in the gospel "the mystery of Christ" (Colossians 4:3)is revealed. Christ is the Mystery of Christianity. It is, therefore, no difficult step to pass from "the mystery" to "Christ," and to supply the word "Christ" as the antecedent to "who." Was manifested (ἐφανερώθη); a word frequently applied to Christ (John 1:31; 1 John 1:2; 1 John 3:5, 8, etc.). The idea is the same in John 1:14. Justified in the spirit. This is rather an obscure expression. But it seems to describe our Lord's spotless righteousness, perhaps with special reference to the declaration of it at his baptism, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." We have the same contrast between the flesh and the Spirit of Christ in 1 Peter 3:18. And between the flesh and the spirit of a Christian man in Romans 8:10, "The body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness." To this clause apparently the remark of Chrysostom applies, "God became man, and man became God." "The spirit" seems to mean the moral nature - the inner man. Seen of angels. Perhaps the multitude of the heavenly host who welcomed the birth of Christ were permitted to see the new-born Babe, as he seems to have done who described him to the shepherds as "wrapped in swaddling clothes" (Luke 2:12-14). Angels ministered unto him after the temptation (Mark 1:13), and in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:43, where the word ὤφθη is used), and at his resurrection (Matthew 28:2). The special interest of angels in the "great mystery" is referred to in 1 Peter 1:12; Hebrews 1:6. Preached among the nations(ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν). It would have been better to keep the rendering "Gentiles" here, to mark the identity of thought with Ephesians 3:6, 8, where, in the apostle's view, the preaching of the gospel to the Gentiles, that they might be fellow-heirs with the Jews of the promises of God, is one main feature of the mystery (comp. 1 Timothy 2:7). Believed on in the world. The next step in this ascending scale is the acceptance of Christ in the world as the Savior thereof. The language here is not stronger than that of Colossians 1:5, 6, "The word of the truth of the gospel, which is come unto you; even as it is also in all the world, and beareth fruit." And in Colossians 1:23, "The gospel which was preached in all creation under heaven" (comp. Romans 1:8). The statement in Mark 16:15-20 might almost have been in St. Paul's mind. Note the use there of the words κηρύξατε ἐκηρύξαν, τὸν κόσμον ὀ πιστεύσας πιστεύσασι ἀνελήφρη.
Received up in glory. The change of "into" (A.V.) into "in" is of very doubtful propriety. In New Testament Greek ἐν, frequently follows verbs of motion, and means the same as εἰς, like the Hebrew בְּ. Our Lord is net said to have ascended in glory (as he appeared at the Transfiguration), but, as St. Mark has it, "He was received up into heaven, and [there] sat down at the right hand of God," fulfilling John 17:5. This grand burst of dogmatic teaching is somewhat like that in 1 Timothy 2:5-7. There is no adequate evidence of its being, as many commentators have thought, a portion of a hymn or creed used in the Church. It rather implies the same tension in the apostle's mind which is apparent in other parts of the Epistle (comp. 1 Timothy 6:11 and following verses)
Sermon Notes For The Resurrection That Brings Hope. 3-30-25 Part 1.
Let’s turn to The Gospel of John Chapter 11
Now, notice The Gospel of John 11:
23 Jesus said unto Martha, your brother will rise again!
24 But Martha said unto Jesus, I know that he will rise again in the Resurrection at the Last Day.
25 And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died, they shall live on!
26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?
27 And Martha said unto Jesus, Yes Lord, I believe that You are The Christ, The Son of God who is to come into the world.
Perhaps you could use a Hope Infusion in regards to, the matters, the challenges, the difficulties, the lost, the uncertainties, the craziness, and the disappointment, that you or someone you care about is facing right now like, a spiritual, or emotional, or mental, or a psychological attack of some kind.
A church family issue, or problem, or conflict. Recovering from a disaster. An untimely job layoff, or a reduction of your working hours. A financial problem. a legal problem. a medical challenge of some kind.
Being A Caregiver for a love one. A marital issue, or problem, or conflict. A family issue, or problem, or conflict. Or, the untimely death of a loved one or a dear friend.
Once again, maybe you could use a hope infusion in regards to, the matters, the challenges, the difficulties, the lost, the uncertainties, the craziness, and the disappointment, that you or someone you care about is facing.
Listen, it's been said that you can live 40 days without food. About 4 days, without water. And only 4 minutes, without air or oxygen. But you & I cannot live 4 seconds, without faith and hope in God! But what exactly is hope?
Is hope just a feel-good word? Is hope just wishful thinking, or wishing for the best? "I hope to have a good day today!”
But hope in this case, is just wishful thinking, because there is no guarantees, that you or I will a good day today!
On the other hand, is hope just an optimistic attitude of the mind that is based on an expectation and a desire for a positive outcome to affect the events and the circumstances in one's life, or for the world at large?
But Biblical hope that God has designed for His people, is totally different from the things that were just mentioned.
For example, Biblical hope is a trustful, faith filled expectation, or the anticipation
of a favorable outcome under God's guidance, purposes and plans for you.
Biblical Hope is the conviction, that no matter the circumstances or situation, God's will for our lives is for good and not for evil, to give us a future and a hope that is an anchor for the soul.
Now, notice Lamentations 3:
21. This I recall to my mind, And therefore, I have hope.
22. It’s through The LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.
23. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
24. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore, I hope in Him!
25. The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.
26. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the Salvation or Deliverance of The LORD.
Now, notice again, Lamentations 3: 24 Jeremiah said, The LORD is my portion says my soul; therefore, I hope In Him The LORD.
Listen, in the same way, hope like faith requires an object greater than itself to depend on,
to trust in, to rely on.
If you & I have hope in hope, or hope in others, or hope in a certain individual, this will only lead us unto a great disappointment.
But hope in God is much different, because God Himself becomes the object of our hope.
God Himself becomes your only hope. Actually, you can spell hope, J,E,S,U,S.
In the Star Wars movie entitled, "A New Hope," A main character called, Princess Leia is being held as a prisoner by the villain, Darth Vader.
However, Princess Leia is able to send a secret message by way of an android named, R2-D2.
When R2-D2 finally arrives to it’s destination, an old but reliable friend, a retired Jedi Master named, Obi-Wan Kenobi, he hears Princess Leia’s plea for help when she says, Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!
Question, who is your only hope?
Well, for the Prophet Jeremiah he said for Himself, tthe LORD is my portion says my soul; therefore, will I hope in Him.
The Resurrection that brings hope.
Now, notice again The Gospel of John 11:
23 Jesus said unto Martha, your brother will rise again!
24 But Martha said unto Jesus, I know that he will rise again in The Resurrection at the Last Day.
25 And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am the Resurrection and life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died, they shall live on!
26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?
27 And Martha said unto Jesus, Yes Lord, I believe that You are The Christ, The Son of God who is to come into the world.
I’m not sure how many of us know how important faith is to hope, and hope is to faith?
Did you know that both faith and hope are like inseparable twins who are dependent upon one another? Show you what I mean!
Notice 1 Peter 1: 21. Whom by Christ do believe in God, that raised Him up from the dead,
and gave Him Glory that your faith and hope might be in God.
Notice Hebrews 11:1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Now, notice Romans 15: 4. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of The Scriptures might have hope.
I Peter 3: 15. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer
to every man that ask you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and respect.
Suppose someone you knew for whatever reasons, is feeling hopeless and is in despair.
But they can see in you, that you have something, that they do not have? Can they see that you have hope, no matter what is going on!
Remember I Peter 3: 15 says, to be ready always, to give an answer to anyone that asks you, the reason of or for the hope that is in you.
Do you think anyone would like to have that which you have, Hope!
There is a famous painting of a blind woman in rag-like clothing, playing a harp.
Although the harp that she was playing only had one string, she still was able to made music to Praise The Lord. And in the eyes of many this was an audacious act on her part.
Because the blind woman could have just sat there feeling sorry for herself, complaining, bitter, resentful, suicidal.
But instead, even though there seemed to be no hope, she made the choice to believe in
The God of Hope. And having the audacity to Hope in The Lord regardless of her circumstance. She truly believed that God had something better for her, whether in this life, or the life to come.
Listen, when we look through our biblical eye-glasses, and our eyes are steadfast upon The Lord. Only then, we will find the joy, the peace, and the strength we have been looking for.
Hope in The Lord will provide for us the way forward, even when times look bleak and uncertain.
See Psalms 119: 114. You are my hiding place and my shield: I hope in Your word.
See Psalms 130: 5. I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, and in His Word do I hope.
See Psalms 31: 24. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you that hope in The LORD.
See Jeremiah 29:
11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
12. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.
13. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
An interesting Lab-Rat Psychological Study.
Two psychological researchers took a group of lab rats and placed them in a large tub of water in which they were able to swim around in but were not able to escape from.
Also, the researchers continued to spray the rats in the tub with very cold water. This first group of lab rats unfortunately ended up drowning, after just 17 minutes of swimming.
Next, the researchers took another group of lab rats and repeated the same experiment under the same conditions.
Now, 16 minutes into the experiment as this group of rats were also about to drown, the researchers reached in and removed each lab rat from their Unfortunate circumstance.
Then the researchers dried the lab rats off, placed them in a cage, and fed them, let them recover for a few days. But then the lab rats were put back in the tub of water and sprayed with very cold water again.
However, this time, the lab rats were able to swim around for 37 hours before they show signs that they were about to give up as the two researchers again reached in and removed each lab rat from their ordeal.
The two psychological researchers after this experiment concluded that the reason for this extra effort by this second group of lab rats who were able to swim for 37 hours, unlike the first group of rats who only survived seventeen minutes.
It was because the second group of lab rats had been saved, rescued, delivered, and they had a hope, or an expectation that they would experience salvation or deliverance from the researchers.
Listen, The Bible says in Lamentations 3:26, It is good that a person should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation or deliverance of the LORD, (Yahweh or Jehovah).
So always know whenever we are faced with some kind of Unfortunate circumstance, that according to The LORD’s Will, Plan, And Purpose, He can Deliver, Liberate, or Preserved Anyone from Anything, whose Faith and Hope remain in Him, (The LORD).
Sermon Notes For 4-6-25 For The Resurrection That Brings Hope Part 2
Let’s turn to The Gospel of John Chapter 11 and let’s continue with our newest topic that we have entitled, “The Resurrection That Brings Hope!” (Repeat)
*When you think about it, once a year we have the privilege to renew our minds regarding a undisputed truth, an irrefutable fact! *Once a year we have the privilege to refocus on something that really matters both, in the here and now, and in the future that is to come! *And lastly, once a year we have the privilege to remember what someone did that changed everything!
Now, let’s notice again The Gospel of John 11: 23 Jesus said unto Martha, your brother will rise again! 24 But Martha said unto Jesus, I know that he will rise again in The Resurrection at The Last Day. 25 And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and The Life! Do you believe this? 27 And Martha said unto Jesus, Yes Lord, I believe that You are The Christ, The Son of God who is to come into the world.
Perhaps you could use a hope infusion in regards to the matters, the challenges, the difficulties, the lost, the uncertainties, the craziness and the disappointment that you or someone you care about is facing right now.
Perhaps, a spiritual or emotional, or mental, or a psychological attack of some kind. A church family issue, or problem, or conflict. Recovering from a disaster. But what exactly is Hope? Is Hope just an optimistic attitude of the mind that is based on an expectation and a desire for a positive outcome to affect the events and the circumstances in one's life?
Yet, Biblical Hope that God has designed for His people is totally different from what most people think of. *Biblical Hope is a trustful, faith-filled expectation, Or the anticipation of a favorable outcome under God's guidance, purposes, and plans. *Biblical Hope is the conviction that no matter the circumstances or situation, God's will for our lives is for good and not for evil, in order to give us a future and a hope, an anchor for the soul. *Finally, Biblical Hope requires that God is to be the only one in whom we place our hope in!
Now, turn to Lamentations Chapter 3. And let me show you an example of a fail-proof hope someone had while in the midst of a challenging situation and circumstances, that we can have also!
Now, let’s notice Lamentations 3: 21. This I recall to my mind, and therefore, I have hope. 22. It’s through The LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. 23. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24. The Lord is my portion says my soul therefore, I hope in Him! 25. The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. 26. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the Salvation or Deliverance of The LORD.
Now, notice again, Lamentations 3: 24. Jeremiah said, The LORD is my portion says my soul; Therefore I hope In Him (The LORD).
Now, see Jeremiah 29: 11.
And see Psalms 31: 24. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you that hope in The LORD.
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now, let’s notice again The Gospel of John 11:25. And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and The Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died, they shall live on! (Stop here)
Now again, Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and The Life! (Stop here) Now, what our Lord Jesus said unto Martha regarding that He Himself that He was The Resurrection and The Life, which is 1 of 7 “I am statements our Lord Jesus claimed for Himself as being God.
(Remember) in Exodus 3:14. That God revealed His primary name unto Moses saying, I AM-WHO-I AM! And Moses this is what you are to say unto the Israelites, “I AM” has sent me unto you!
Now, here in The Gospel of John, there are 7 metaphorical “I am statements” that our Lord Jesus uses to describe Himself and His purpose.
“I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51). In this chapter, Jesus establishes a pattern that continues through John’s gospel—Jesus makes a statement about who He is, and He backs it up with something He does. In this case, Jesus states that He is the bread of life just after He had fed the 5,000 in the wilderness. At the same time, He contrasts what He can do with what Moses had done for their ancestors: “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die” (verses 49–50).
“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5). This second of Jesus’ “I am” statements in John’s gospel comes right before He heals a man born blind. Jesus not only says He is the light; He proves it. Jesus’ words and actions echo Genesis 1:3, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
“I am the door” (John 10:7 and 9, ESV). This “I am” statement stresses that no one can enter the kingdom of heaven by any other means than Christ Himself. Jesus’ words in this passage are couched in the imagery of a sheepfold. He is the one and only way to enter the fold. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber” (verse 1, ESV).
“I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11, 14). With this “I am” statement, Jesus portrays His great love and care. He is the One who willingly protects His flock even to the point of death (verses 11 and 15). When Jesus called Himself the good shepherd, He unmistakably took for Himself one of God’s titles in the Old Testament: “The Lord is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1).
“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). Jesus made this “I am” statement immediately before raising Lazarus from the dead. Again, we see that Jesus’ teaching was not just empty talk; when He made a claim, He substantiated it with action. He holds “the keys of death and the grave” (Revelation 1:18, NLT). In raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus showed how He can fulfill Yahweh’s promise to ancient Israel: “[God’s] dead shall live; their bodies shall rise” (Isaiah 26:19, ESV). Apart from Jesus, there is neither resurrection nor eternal life.
“I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). This powerful “I am” statement of Christ’s is packed with meaning. Jesus is not merely one way among many ways to God; He is the only way. Scripture said that “The very essence of [God’s] words is truth” (Psalm 119:160, NLT), and here is Jesus proclaiming that He is the truth—confirming His identity as the Word of God (see John 1:1, 14). And Jesus alone is the source of life; He is the Creator and Sustainer of all life and the Giver of eternal life.
“I am the true vine” (John 15:1, 5). The final metaphorical “I am” statement in the Gospel of John emphasizes the sustaining power of Christ. We are the branches, and He is the vine. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it is joined in vital union with the vine, only those who are joined to Christ and receive their power from Him produce fruit in the Christian life.
There are two more “I am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. These are not metaphors; rather, they are declarations of God’s name, as applied by Jesus to Himself. The first instance comes as Jesus responds to a complaint by the Pharisees. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus says, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58, NLT). The verbs Jesus uses are in stark contrast with each other: Abraham was, but I am. There is no doubt that the Jews understood Jesus’ claim to be the eternal God incarnate, because they took up stones to kill Him (verse 59).
The second instance of Jesus applying to Himself the name I AM comes in the Garden of Gethsemane. When the mob came to arrest Jesus, He asked them whom they sought. They said, “Jesus of Nazareth,” and Jesus replied, “I am he” (John 18:4–5). Then something strange happened: “When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground” (verse 6). Perhaps explaining the mob’s reaction is the fact that the word he has been provided by our English translators. Jesus simply said, “I am.” Applying God’s covenant name to Himself, Jesus demonstrated His power over His foes and showed that His surrender to them was entirely voluntary (see John 10:17–18; 19:11).
Now, for the next several minutes, I would like us to learn from a situation that a family went through that most of us will probably go through as well. Especially when the time comes and it is our family member who knows the Lord, But they are ill or have Medical condition.
And unfortunately, that illness or that Medical condition God Allows it to take their lives, and they pass away even though we prayed, even though we asked The Lord to help and to heal, and even though we ask God please don’t let them die! And now, We are feeling sorrowful, disappointed, angry, and maybe even hopeless.
In those moments when we don’t understand, (Question) how can you and I keep our hope and trust in The One who said I am The Resurrection and The Life?
Now, see again The Gospel of John 11:1. Now a certain man was sick who Lazarus of Bethany, from the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (Stop here)
Now, also see Luke 10: 38 Now, it happened as they went that Jesus entered a certain village; a certain woman named Martha welcomed Jesus into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted or overwhelmed with much serving or preparing. And Martha approached Jesus and said Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone, therefore, You tell her to help me!41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, You are worried and troubled about many things.42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her. (Stop here)
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now, see again The Gospel of John 11: 3 Therefore, the sisters sent unto Jesus saying, Lord behold He whom You love is sick. 5 Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister Mary and Lazarus. (Stop here) (Note) notice the birth order of these three siblings.
Now, see again The Gospel of John 11:3. Therefore, the sisters sent unto Jesus saying, Lord behold He whom You love is sick.
Question, Why would God allow something bad to happen to someone He loves? Well, see Revelation 3:19. Our Lord Jesus is speaking. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten, therefore be zealous and repent. (Stop here)
Remember, in those moments when we don’t understand, (Question) how can you and I keep our hope and trust in The One who said I am The Resurrection and The Life?
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now see again, The Gospel of John 11:6. So, when Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, Jesus stayed two more days in the place where He was at! (Stop here) *This is totally wrong. * This is totally unacceptable.(Question), God’s delays from our perspective are they always His Denials to our request?
Well, see Isaiah 55: 8 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Remember, in those moments when we don’t understand, (Question) how can you and i keep our hope and trust in The One Who Said I am The Resurrection And The Life?
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now, see again The Gospel of John 11: 17 So when Jesus came, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 20 Then Martha as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming she went and met Jesus, however Mary stayed in the house. 21 Then Martha said unto Jesus, Lord if You had been here my brother would not have died! 32 Then when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died. (Stop here)
(Question) Should we allow our grief, our sadness, our disappointment, to cause our mouths to slander God?
Well, see Job 1: 20 Then Job arose: tore his robe and shaved his head; and Job fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And Job said: Naked, I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord. 22 In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now, see again The Gospel of John 11: 33. Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping,He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, Where have you laid him? They said unto Him, Lord come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, see how He loved Lazarus! 37 But some of the Jews said, could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind, could He not also have kept this man from dying? (Stop here)
(Question) Should I let the criticisms of God by others influence me or change me, that I would abandon my relationship with God?
Well, see Job 2: 8 And Job took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. 9 Then his wife said unto Job, Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die! 10 But Job said unto wife, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and shall we not accept adversity? In all this Job did not sin with his lips!
Remember in those moments when we don’t understand. (Question) How can you and i keep our hope and trust in The One who said I am The Resurrection And The Life?
Sermon Notes For 4-13-25 For The Resurrection That Brings Hope Part 3
The Resurrection That Brings Hope Part 3 Let’s turn to The Gospel of John Chapter 11 And let’s continue with our current topic that we have entitled, “The Resurrection That Brings Hope!” (Repeat)
Now, today as we begin this Holy Week observance starting with Palm Sunday today, but then on next Sunday we will rejoice knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ has been truly resurrected from the dead. an undisputed truth. an irrefutable fact!
For this is something that really matters both in the here and now and in the future that is to come! But most importantly, we should never forget that what our Lord Jesus Christ did in His Resurrection from the dead changed everything!
Now, let’s notice again The Gospel of John 11:25. And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and the Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died, they shall live on!
Now, this Sunday and next Sunday with God’s help, we are going to focus upon 2 words that our Lord Jesus used to describe Himself here in John 11: 25, what I suppose we all take for granted and most likely we are unclear of their significance and importance.
Now, notice John 11:25. The 2 words that our Lord Jesus used. *Our Lord Jesus used the word “Resurrection,” But not the word, “Resuscitation.” *And then our Lord Jesus used the word “Life,” but not the Word, “Consciousness.”
Now again, I suppose these 2 words “Resurrection,” and “Life,” You and I probably take for granted, and most likely we are unclear of their significance and importance, especially these 2 words which originated from the original language of The New Testament, Greek or Koine Greek.
Here is a short article regarding the importance of God, selecting Koine Greek as a language in order to reveal His will, plan, and purpose from the Scriptures Koine is simply the Greek word for “common.” Many people may recognize the word koine from the word koinonia, which means “fellowship.” Fellowship is having something in common. Koine Greek was simply the common language of the Mediterranean world in the first century. As Alexander the Great conquered the “civilized world” of his time, he spread Greek language and culture.
Much like English has become today, Greek became the most common and pervasive “international language” of the day. Since most people could understand Koine, it was uniquely suited to proclaim The Gospel throughout the world.
Not only was Koine Greek common in the sense it enjoyed widespread usage throughout the Roman Empire, but it was also common in the sense that it was not the language of the intellectual and academic elites.
Classical Greek was used by the educated class. Koine Greek was the language of the working man, the peasant, the vendor, and the housewife—there was nothing pretentious about it. It was the vernacular, or vulgar language, of the day.
The great works of Greek literature were written in Classical Greek. No scholar today would care to study anything written in Koine Greek, except for the fact that it is the language of the New Testament. God wanted His Word to be accessible to everyone, and He chose the common language of the day, Koine.
“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. . . . Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord’” (1 Corinthians 1:20–22, 26–31).
Paul was not referring specifically to Koine Greek in this passage, but God’s use of a lowly common language to express the incredible truths of the gospel seems to fit the pattern well.
I pray that today may be the day that you and I will no longer take for granted, nor be unclear of the significance and the importance of the word “Resurrection,” and the word “Life,” that our Lord used for Himself.
Now, if you don’t mind, please allow me to start with the word “Life”, first! And then depending on our time, we will see how far we get regarding the word “Life,” that is used throughout The New Testament.
And then we will move on to our next word “Resurrection” perhaps today, but especially next Sunday, Resurrection Sunday 2025!
Now, in the New Testament the word " Zóé " refers to life in its fullest sense, encompassing both the physical and the spiritual dimension. "Zóé" life is often used to describe Eternal life that is granted through faith in Jesus Christ unto those who believe entering into a personal relationship with God. This "Zóé" life is not merely an unending existence, but a quality of life that is abundant and fulfilling, because of a personal relationship with God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "Zóé" life Only comes from and is sustained by God's own self-existent life that He possesses.
Therefore, The Lord graciously shares His Gift of "Zóé" life with those He has Saved, who are created in His own image with the capacity to know The Lord Intimately.
Now, let’s see 1st John 5: 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life or "Zóé" life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has "Zóé" life. But the one who does not have The Son of God does not have "Zóé" life. 13 These things I have written unto you who believe in the Name of the Son of God, and that you may know that you have eternal life, so that you may continue to believe in the Name of The Son of God.
Remember, "Zóé" life is often used to describe Eternal life that is granted through faith in Jesus Christ unto those who believe entering into a personal relationship with God
Now, see The Gospel of John 10: 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, They will be Saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. But I have come that they The Saved may have "Zóé" life and that they may have (it ) "Zóé" life more abundantly.
Remember, "Zóé" life is not merely an unending existence, but a quality of life that is abundant and fulfilling, because of a personal relationship with God, Father, Son, And Holy Spirit.
Now, see The Gospel of John 5: 21 For as The Father raises the spiritual dead and gives "Zóé" life unto them, even so the Son gives "Zóé" life unto whom He Wills. 24 Most assuredly I say unto you, the one who hears My Word and believes in Him The Father who has sent Me, Jesus said They have everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment,Because they have passed from death into "Zóé" life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the spiritual dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as The Father has "Zóé" life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have "Zóé" lifein Himself.
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11.
Now, let’s notice again The Gospel of John 11:25. And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection And The Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died they shall live on!
Anastasis literally means, to stand up, or to stand again apart from physical death and not just resuscitated. • Anastasis Literally means Not Being subject to physical death any longer. •Never to die physically again. •But instead, to reside in a supernatural body, a glorified body, in which the individual’s nature, their essence and substance is transformed and is radically different than before. And an example of those definitions I gave, are clearly seen in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Show you what I mean!
Now, see The Gospel of John 20: 11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then the angels said unto her, Woman why are you weeping? And Mary said unto The angels, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. 14 Now when Mary had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, But Mary did not know that it was Jesus! 15 Then Jesus said unto Mary, Woman why are you weeping? And Who are you seeking? And Mary thinking that the one speaking to her was the groundskeeper, Mary said unto Him, Sir if You have carried Him away tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away. 16 Then Jesus said unto Mary, "Mary!" Mary turned and said unto Jesus, "Rabboni," which means, Teacher! 17 But then Jesus said unto Mary, Do not cling unto Me! Because I have not yet ascended unto
My Father. But you go unto My brethren and say unto them, I am ascending unto My Father and your Father, and unto My God and your God.
Now remember, the word “Resurrection” or “Anastasis” can means to stand up, or to stand again apart from physical death and not just resuscitated. • Anastasis Literally means not being subject to physical death any longer. •Never to die physically again.•But instead, to reside in a supernatural body, a glorified body, in which the individual’s nature, their essence and substance is transformed and is radically different than before. And an example of those definitions I gave, are clearly seen in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Now, see The Gospel of John 20: 19 Then, the same day at the evening, being the first day of the week (when the doors were shut) where the disciples were assembled, because they fear the Jews. And unexpectedly, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said unto them, Peace be with you! 20 When Jesus had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw it was the Lord.
Now, see The Gospel of John 20: 26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, (the doors being shut), yet Jesus stood in the midst, and said, "Peace unto you!" 27 Then He said to Thomas Reach your finger here and look at My hands; and reach your hand here and put it into My side. Don’t be unbelieving but believing! 28 And Thomas answered and said unto Jesus, My Lord and my God! 29 Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen Me you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Now, let’s see The Gospel of Luke 24: 36 Now as (They) the two men who were on the road of Emmaus said these things to the disciples. Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace to you. 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. 38 And He said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have. 40 When He had said this, Jesus showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe for Joy, But marveled. Jesus said to them Have you any food here? 42 So they gave Jesus a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43 And Jesus took it and ate in their presence.
Sermon Notes For 4-20-25 For The Resurrection That Brings Hope Part 4
Let’s turn to The Gospel of John Chapter 11. Today, with God’s help lets finish up our current topic that we have entitled, “The Resurrection that brings Hope!” Now, as we conclude this special week known by most as Holy Week which started with Palm Sunday last Sunday. And then 3 days ago it was Good Friday.
Now, on this Special Sunday April 20, 2025 Resurrection Sunday, together we can rejoice knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ has been truly Resurrected from the Dead. And for you & me who are in Christ, •This is an undisputed truth. •This is an irrefutable fact!
For this is something that really matters both in the here and now and in the future that is to come! But most importantly, we should never forget that what our Lord Jesus Christ did in His Resurrection from the dead literally changed everything!
Now, let’s notice again The Gospel of John 11:25. And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and The Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died, they shall live on!
Now, last Sunday I mentioned that there are 2 words that our Lord Jesus used to describe Himself here in John 11: 25, that I feel we all take for granted, and most likely some of you are unclear of their significance and importance. Show you what I mean!
Now, let’s notice these 2 words that our Lord Jesus used to describe Himself here in the gospel of John 11: 25,*For our Lord Jesus used the word “Resurrection,” but not the word, “Resuscitation.”*Next, our Lord Jesus used the word “Life,” to describe Himself, But not the word, “Consciousness.”
But again, these 2 words “Resurrection” and “Life,” You & I probably take for granted and most likely some of us are un-clear of their significance and importance, especially when these 2 words are presented to us from the original language of The New Testament, (Koine Greek.)
I Have Available If You Are Interested A Short Article Regarding The Reason Why God Selecting Koine Greek As A Human Language In Order To Reveal Himself, His Will, His Plan, And His Purpose, Which Are Seen In The Scriptures. Koine is simply the Greek word for “common.” Many people may recognize the word koine from the word koinonia, which means “fellowship.” Fellowship is having something in common. (Stop here)
Now, Back To The Gospel Of John Chapter 11. Now Again Notice The Gospel Of John 11:25 And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am The Resurrection and The Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died they shall live on!
Remember, The Word “Anastasis” Literally means, to stand up, Or to stand again apart from physical death and not just resuscitated.• Anastasis also means, not being subject to physical death any longer.•Never to die physically again.•But instead, to reside in a supernatural body, a glorified body, in which the individual’s nature, their essence and substance is transformed and is radically different than before.
Now, another good example will be the bodily resurrection of the redeemed of The Lord from every generation who will one day experience something very similar to our Lord’s Bodily Resurrection from the dead.
Now, let’s see 1st. Corinthians 15: 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed. 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?"
Now, let’s also see 1st Thessalonians 4: 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who asleep in Jesus or have passed on. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep, passed on. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will be resurrected first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
Now, let’s go back to The Gospel of John 11: Now, notice again The Gospel of John 11:25. And then Jesus said unto Martha, I am the Resurrection and the Life! The one who believes in Me though they may have died they shall live on! Anastasis literally means, •to stand up, or to stand again apart from physical death. •Not being subject to physical death any longer. •Never to die physically again.
Now, our last example will be the unredeemed of the past, of the present and of the future, because every one of them will also experience a different kind of Resurrection.
These individuals will reside in some type of supernatural body which cannot be consumed or destroyed.
However, they will be subject unto the second death, that is eternal separation from God and unfortunately being totally confined unto the lake of fire, forever. Show you what I mean!
Now, see Revelation 20: 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the unredeemed dead small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the unredeemed dead were judged according to their works by the things which were written in the books. 13 Now, the sea or oceans gave up the dead, the unredeemed dead who were in it!And death or the graves and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they the unredeemed dead were judged each one according to their works. 14 Then death or the graves and Hades were cast into the lake of fire, this is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Now, let see The Gospel of John 5: 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
Finally, see Romans 10: 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 13 For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved!
Sermon Notes For 4-27-25
Now, back in May of 2022 which actually carried over also into 2023, I was led by The Lord to share a series of messages which were entitled, “Is That Right?”
And the reason for all of this was that you & I either knowingly or unknowingly, have probably embraced some of the Christian “Clichés” of our times! And perhaps we have embraced some of the popular religious sayings and statements of our times!
And ideas about God within our culture which are unscriptural and very misleading regarding •The Purpose, •And the Plan, •And the Will of God! Clichés, Criticisms and Concerns. Today as The Lord leads us we will be going in a slightly different direction.
First, we will consider a couple more Christian Clichés. But then, we will also consider a few of the criticisms and the concerns both Christians and Non-Christians have.
For example. “God Is Good All The Time, And All The Time God Is Good!” First, a well-known Christian Cliché which some people say and that is, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is Good!”
Next, here is a criticism that both Christians and Non-Christians have which some people say and that is, “I believe that all roads lead to God! As long as I am sincere that’s what really matters.”
Next, another criticism that both Christians and Non-Christians have which some people say and that is, “I believe all roads lead to Heaven! As long as I am sincere that’s what really matters.”
Next, a concern that both Christians and Non-Christians have which some people say and that is, “How good enough do you have to be to go to Heaven?” “Why would a Good God send people to Hell!”
Next, now here is a well-known religious cliché which some people say and that is, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance.” “I am so tired of people who say they’re Christians, but they won’t forgive others!”
And lastly, another criticism that both Christians and Non-Christians have which some people say and that is, “I am so tired of people who say they’re Christians, but they won’t forgive others!”
So, once again with God’s help, we will look at a few of the clichés, criticisms and concerns from those who are Christian and from those who are Non-Christian. From those who are Saved and from those who are Unsaved. and from those who are Religious, and from those who are Non-Religious.
So again, over time we will look at each one of these clichés like, *God is good all the time, and all the time God is good! *Or, My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance.
And over time we will look at each one of these criticisms like, *I believe that all roads lead to God! As I am sincere that’s what really matters. Or, I believe all roads lead to Heaven! As long as I am sincere that’s what really matters. Or, I am so tired of people who say they’re Christians, but they won’t forgive others! And lastly over time, we will look at each one of these concerns like, how good enough do you have to be to go to Heaven? Or, why would a Good God send people to Hell!
Now then, our first area we want to consider and that we need to address are a couple of clichés which some people say like, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!” Or, another cliché that some people will say is, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance.”
And by the way, the word Cliché can mean, a saying, or an expression that has been so overly used that it has become A meaningless slogan. Or A trivialized phrase. Or a superficial statement like, a cheer, a bromide, or a platitude.
Now then, our first area we want to consider and that we need to address are a couple of clichés which some people say like, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!”
Listen, for many saying, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good,” has become more of a circumstantial saying! However, what happens when the situations or the circumstances goes extremely negative?
May I give some examples of situations or circumstances that gone extremely negative but could you and i still without hesitation say to ourselves and to others that God is good all the time, and all the time God is good?” The LA City and The LA County billions of dollar deficits, which will affect thousands of people with layoffs and cuts in services. The persecution and massacres of Black African Christians in The Democratic Republic of Congo. The spread of the bird flu virus from one species to another. The alarming concern now how easy the bird flu virus can spread from Poultry to mammals. And from mammals to humans. An unexpected diagnosis. An unexpected death within your immediate family. A spiritual attack of some kind That has caused you confusion disillusionment or anxiety. Can God be good even though he allows things to go bad?
Let’s turn to Romans 8: 28. Today, let’s return back to our ongoing series that we have entitled, “Is That Right, Regarding Some Of The Clichés, The Criticisms, and the concerns among some who are saved or unsaved during these times. Part 2. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!”
Now our first area we want to consider and that we need to address and is the cliché that some says which is, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!”
(Question) But is that right? Is that Biblical? And is that true? I know for many this saying, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good,” has become more of a circumstantial saying, especially when our circumstance is favorable!
However, what happens when our favorable circumstance goes extremely negative is God still good all the time, and all the time is God still good?”
(Questions) Can God be good even though He allows things to go bad sometimes?
Well, let’s see NASB of Romans 8:28 which says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good, unto those who love God, unto those who are called according to His purpose.” Now again, Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for Good!
•(Question) But what does the word “Good” really mean? •And what does it really mean that God is good all the time?
Listen, one of the inherit character traits of God is that He is Good! Mark 10: 17 Now as our Lord Jesus was going out on the road, Someone came running, And knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” 18 So, Jesus said unto the young man Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is God!
Now, here are some of the inherit character traits of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that would help us to know Him better, so that we would have faith and trust in The Lord, no matter what! •God’s character is such that He is always Just. Genesis 18:25. •God’s character is such that He is Truthful. Book of Numbers 23:19. •God’s character is such that He is Merciful. The book of Lamentations 3: 22&23. •God’s character is such that He is Gracious. Psalms 84:11. •God’s character is such that He is Longsuffering. II Peter 3:9 .•God’s character is such that He is Faithful. Psalms 9: 10 & The book of Lamentations 3: 22&23. •God’s character is such that He is Good. The book of Nahum 1: 7. •God’s character is such that He is Love or Loving. Jeremiah 31:3 & 1st John 4:7&8. •God’s character is such that He is Righteous. Psalms 145:17-19.
Sermon Notes For 5-04-25
Let’s turn to Romans 8:28.
Today, let’s return back to our ongoing series that we have entitled, “Is That Right, Regarding Some Of The Clichés, The Criticisms, And The Concerns Among Some Who Are Saved Or Unsaved During These Times. (Part 2)
Now, our first area we want to consider, and that we need to address and that is a cliché that some folks says which is, “God Is Good All The Time, And All The Time God Is Good!”
(Question) But is that right? Is that Biblical? And is that True? I think for many this Christian saying, “God Is Good All The Time, And All The Time God Is Good,” has become more of a circumstantial saying, as long as our circumstance is favorable!
However, what happens when our favorable circumstance goes extremely negative. •(Question) Is God still good all the time, and all the time is God still good?” •(Questions) Can God be good even though He allows things to go bad sometimes?
Well, let’s see Romans 8:28, which says, from The NASB, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for Good, unto those who love God, unto those who are called according to His purpose.” Now again, Romans 8:28 from The NASB says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good!
•(Question) But what does the word “Good” really mean? •And what does it really mean that God is good all the time?
First, what does the word, “Good” really mean? Surprisingly, both the English definition compared to the original language definition of the New Testament, Surprisingly most English dictionary definitions are very similarities and they can be very helpful regarding the word “Good!”
Now, let’s see 2nd Timothy 2:15. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth!
Question, Why is this all necessary for you and I study God’s Word for ourselves?
Now, let’s see 2nd Timothy 3: 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Now, let’s turn to The Gospel of Mark Chapter 10. Now our next question is, “What does it really mean that God is good all the time?”
Now notice The Gospel of Mark 10: 17 Now as our Lord Jesus was going out on the road, someone came running and knelt before Him and asked The Lord, Good Teacher, What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 So, our Lord Jesus said unto this young man why do you call Me Good? No one is Good but One and that is God!
Question. “What does it really mean that God is good all the time?”Listen, one of the inherit character traits of God is that He is “good” all the time!
In fact, let’s take some time and rehearse in our minds some of the other important inherit character traits of God, either The Father, Or The Son, or The Holy Spirit, that will be help us to know God, so that we would have Faith And Trust in the Lord, no matter what! •God’s character is such that He is Always Just. Genesis 18:25. •God’s character is such that He is Truthful. Book of Numbers 23:19. •God’s character is such that He is Merciful. The book of Lamentations 3:22&23. •God’s character is such that He is Gracious. Psalms 84:11. •God’s character is such that He is Longsuffering. II Peter 3: 9.•God’s character is such that He is Faithful. Psalms 9: 10 & The Book of Lamentations 3: 22&23. •God’s character is such that He Is Good. The book of Nahum 1: 7. •God’s character is such that He Is Love Or Loving. Jeremiah 31:3 & 1st John 4: 7&8. •God’s character is such that He Is Righteous. Psalms 145:17-19 Listen. One of the important inherit character traits of God is that He is “Good” all the time! Unlike you & me who at best we are only partially “Good” some of the time, and that’s only because of The One who indwells us, and we choose to walk in Him daily, verse 16.
Quote Galatians 5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, Goodness faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.But our God, He is “Good” all the time!
Sermon Notes For 5-18-25 Is That Right Concerning The Clichés, The Criticisms, And The Concerns Among Those Who Are Saved Or Unsaved That Some During These Times, (And You May Be One Of Them). (Part 3.)
Let’s turn to James 1: Today, let’s return back to our ongoing series as we are currently looking at A Few Clichés, Criticisms And Concerns Among Those Who Are Saved Or Unsaved That Some During These Times, And You May Be One Of Them. Part 3.
Now, our next area that we want to consider, and that we need to address and it is a cliché that some folks will say, or they will use to justify themselves in the eyes of men and that is, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance.” (Repeat)
(Question) But is that right? Is that Biblical? And is that true?
Now, the phrase “My religion is a religion of love and tolerance” is commonly attributed to a 13th-century Persian Sufi mystic & poet named, Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi.
Next, surprisingly the Actor & Entertainer Will Smith recently said, “My religion is a religion of love,” in which he claims that he borrowed such a quote from Muhammad Ali.
Also, Will Smith went on to say, “I believe in the oneness and the possibility of harmony between people who are all reaching for - the one truth.”
Next, Muhammad Ali once said: My religion is Islam. It’s a religion of peace. It’s a religion of love. It’s a religion of being kind to people.”
Next, Mahatma Gandhi who once say this, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Gandhi also said, “Truth is my God.” And lastly, Gandhi believed all religions had love and tolerance at their core.
And finally, the late John Lennon a founding member of the Beatles, although there is no verifiable quote from John Lennon in which he explicitly says, “My religion is a religion of love and tolerance.” Yet, John Lennon often spoke about love, peace, and spirituality in his interviews and in his song lyrics.
For example, one of Lennon’s most famous song lyrics which he wrote and sung was called, “Imagine!” “Imagine all the people sharing all the world. You may say I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one!”
So, while John Lennon may not have used the phrase, “My religion is a religion of love and tolerance.” But this phrase would have aligned with his personal beliefs and philosophy.
So, once again, i want to consider this cliché that some folks will say, or they will use to justify themselves in the eyes of men and that is, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance,”
(Question) But what actually is meant, if someone uses this phrase, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance.” This sounds good, because when a person usually is expressing this kind of statement, they are letting you know that they are not affiliated, nor are they a part of any Religious Group, or any Local Church Fellowship, or any Mainline Denomination.
Because for them most organize religious organizations or churches, or denominations, truly fall short when it comes to showing love and tolerance, in their opinion.
But most importantly, for some this statement, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance,” has become another religious cliché to hide-behind, in order to make others think more highly of them!
And by way don’t forget, the word “cliché” can mean, a saying, or an expression that has been overly used so much that it has become *a meaningless slogan, *or a trivialized phrase. *Or a superficial statement like, *a cheer, *a bromide, *or a platitude.
Now, let’s see notice James 1:27. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: *to visit orphans and widows in their trouble.*And to keep oneself un-spotted from the world.
Listen, whenever the Bible chooses to use the word religion in a positive, it is never referring to certain types of religious ceremonies, rituals, rites, prayers, and offerings. Where everything is very ceremonial, traditional, and external or an outward display of pageantry.
Think about what has been happening over the last few weeks regarding the death of Pope Francis, and the choosing of the next Pope, Pope Leo!
The certain types of religious ceremonies, rituals, rites, prayers, and offerings. Where everything is very ceremonial, traditional, and external or an outward display of pageantry.
By the way, does anyone know what the word “Pope” means? “Holy Father.” But see later Matthew 23: 8-11.
Now, let’s see 2nd Timothy 3: 1 But know this that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, *5 Having a form of Godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (Stop here)
“Having a form of Godliness!” “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance!” So then, let’s put that to the test and let’s just see how much love and tolerance anyone of us think we have!
Now, let’s see Matthew 5:43. Our Lord Jesus is speaking, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor but hate your enemy. (Stop here)
(Question) is there anywhere in the Bible within the scriptures that gives permission or encourages us to hate our enemies?Well, some would point to Psalm 139: Now, see Psalms 139: 19 Oh that You would slay the wicked, O God! Depart from me therefore you bloodthirsty men. 20 For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate them O Lord who hate You? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? 22. I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. (Stop here)
Now, here is an important thing to know, even though what you and I are reading in certain parts of the Psalms are truly stated by whoever the human author was at the time. Listen, Their statement is not a statement of Divine Truth that we should practice or follow.
For example, there is a category of Psalms in the book of Psalms that are called, the Im-preca-tory Psalms. About 16 Psalms. Psalms 3. Psalms 5. Psalms 10. Psalms 17. Psalms 35. Psalms 58. Psalms 59. Psalms 69. Psalms 70. Psalms 79. Psalms 83. Psalms 109. Psalms 129. Psalms 137. *Psalms 139. Psalms 140. Imprecatory is a request or prayers, or praying is when someone request or prays that God to curse their enemies or that God to do harmful things to bad people.
In fact, the verb “to imprecate” means to invoke a curse, and in the context of the Bible, this means to call upon God to curse someone. It is an appeal unto a supernatural power to inflict evil on someone or some group. Some synonyms for Imprecatory are, *malediction. *condemnation. *curse. *execration.
Now, here is an important thing to know, Even though what you and I are reading in certain parts of the Psalms are truly stated by whoever the human author was at the time. Listen. Their statement is not a statement of Divine Truth that we should practice or follow. And here is the main reason why!
Now, see Romans 12:19. Beloved do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; For it is written vengeance is mine, I will repay says the Lord.
Now, back to Matthew Chapter 5. Now, let’s see Matthew 5:44. Our Lord Jesus continues, *But I say to you, love your enemies, *bless those who curse you, *do good to those who hate you, *and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (Stop there)
Now, it is apparent unto me, that God’s ways are not our ways. And therefore, daily I need to request for myself, divine wisdom and patience. and the right attitude when it comes to these 4 unexpected verbs that are revealed to us here in Matthew 5: 44, that I am to implement when dealing with an enemy.
(Question) So, who is my enemy? Well, in Jesus’ days for many it was the 1st Century Gentile Roman Army as an occupying force in their homeland. In Jesus’ days, for many it would be a Jewish individual who was a tax collector for the Roman government. In Jesus days they were known as “Publicans.” In Jesus’ days, for many it was a Mixed Race of Jewish individuals, who had a different origin, they were known as the Samaritans. In Jesus’ days, for many it was certain Jewish individuals who had a different belief system, they were known as the Sadducees. And in Jesus’ days, for many it was a minority of Jewish individuals who had a different political objective, they were known as the Zealots.
Now today, in the 21st Century when asked who is my enemy for many it would be, an Immigrant. Someone who votes and supports a different political party than yourself. A Criminal. A Terrorist organization. A Rogue nation. A foreign country. A civil war within one’s country. A local community or neighborhood in conflict with each other due to Racial or ethnic tensions, or street or biker gangs or drug cartels territorial disputes.
However. with the help of the Scriptures, there are 2 important references that may surprise you to know who your enemy could be from a human perspective!
Quote Micah 7: 5 Do not trust in a friend; Do not put your confidence in a companion; and also guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom. 6 For a son dishonors father, A Daughter rises against her mother, Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; *A man's enemies are the men or the people of his own household. 7 Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me.
Now, the word “Enemy” or “Enemies” can also mean, Someone who is in opposition with you, or you with them. Someone who is in conflict with you, or you with them. Someone in which you have a broken relationship with, or them with you. Someone in which you have a dysfunctional or toxic relationship with, or them with you. A spouse, an ex-spouse, a sibling, a child, a parent, a grandparent, a grandchild, an in-law,a relative, a friend, an associate, a colleague, a co-worker, a brother or sister in the body of Christ, or within your church family. Or a leader within the body of Christ, or within your church family.
(Quote) Matthew 10: 34, Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, *36 And a man's enemies will be those of his own household.
Now again, the word, “Enemy” or “Enemies” can also mean, someone who is in opposition with you, or you with them. Someone who is in conflict with you, or you with them. Someone in which you have a broken relationship with, or them with you. Someone in which you have A dysfunctional or toxic relationship with, or them with you.
And again, it can be, A spouse, an ex-spouse, a sibling, a child, a parent, a grandparent, a grandchild, a in-law, a relative, a friend, an associate, a colleague, a co-worker, a brother or sister in the body of Christ, or within your church family. Or a Leader within the body of Christ, or within your church family.
Now, let’s go back to Matthew Chapter 5. Now, notice carefully here in Matthew Chapter 5: 44. But I say to you, love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. And pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (Stop here)
Now, let’s take one of these 4 unexpected verbs, these action words that occur in rapid succession which are revealed to us here in Matthew 5: 44, that we are to implement when dealing with an enemy.
Now, notice again Matthew Chapter 5: 44. But I say to you love your enemies. Love is our first unexpected verb an action word that most of us don’t really understand. But Let’s see if we can change that!
First, a definition to remember and to apply. Agápē ἀγάπη, True love, Biblical love is, sacrificial and unconditional. Agápē Love is the kind of love that will put the needs of others above it's own. Agápē Love is the kind of love that is fully committed, devoted and faithful, Agápē Love is never motivated by emotions or feelings or intellectual understanding. Also Agápē Love is never motivated by the behavior or attitude of the one to whom this kind of love is being expressed unto.Because Agápē Love is an action word, a verb, not an adjective, not a noun. Agápē Love is never passive nor indifferent, instead, Agápē Love is caring, concern, compassionate, empathetic, and willing to help indiscriminately when dealing with another or others.
So, to the Greek or Roman mind of their day this kind of love was something that was unattainable, unlikely, and impossible! Because no human being could ever love like that, only a god if they chose too.
Now, see 1st Corinthians 13: 4 Love suffers long and is kind; Love does not envy; Love does not parade itself, Love is not puffed up. 5 Love does not behave rudely, Love does not seek its own, Love is not provoked, Love thinks no evil; 6 Love does not rejoice in iniquity, instead Love rejoices in the truth; 7 Love bears all things, love believes all things, love hopes all things, love endures all things. 8 Love never fails.
Now, see Romans 5: 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now, hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by The Holy Spirit who was given unto us.
Now, see Galatians 5: 22 But the fruit of The Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in The Spirit, let us also walk in The Spirit.
Sermon Notes For 5-25-25 For The Clichés, Criticisms, And Concerns.
Let’s Turn To The Gospel Of Matthew Chapter 5. Today, Let’s Continue With Our Ongoing Series As We Are Currently Looking At A Few Of The Clichés, Criticisms, And Concerns Among Those Who Are Saved Or Unsaved That Some May Have During These Times, And You May Be One Of Them. Part 4.
Now Today, With God’s Help We Are Going To Finish Up This Area That We Needed To Address Because For Some Folks They Will Say Or They Will Use This Cliché To Justify Themselves In The Eyes Of Other People By Saying This, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance!” (Question) But Is That Right? Is That Biblical? And Is That True?
So once again, let’s consider this cliché that some folks will say, or they will use to justify themselves in the eyes of other people by saying this, “My Religion is a Religion Of Love And Tolerance,”
(Question) But what is usually meant, if someone uses this phrase, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance?” because on the surface this sounds good, “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance!”
However, this kind of statement usually is letting us know that they are not affiliated, or a member, nor are they a part of any Religious Group, or any local Church fellowship, or any mainline Denomination.
Because for them most organize religious organizations or churches, or denominations, in their opinion, these groups have truly fallen short when it comes to showing love and tolerance to one another and others!
But most importantly, the main reason why some would use “My Religion Is A Religion Of Love And Tolerance” is that they may be able to hide-behind this religious cliché in order to have others think more highly of them!
So again, let’s do like we did last Sunday as we put this religious cliché to the test and let’s just see how much love and tolerance any one of us think we have!
Now, let’s first carefully notice again Matthew 5: 44, and our Lord Jesus speaking, But I say unto you Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. And Pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (Stop here)
Now, last Sunday, at least from our perspective, you & I were surely challenged by these 4 unreasonable commands, these 4 unthinkable directives from our Lord Jesus Christ when it comes to dealing with an enemy, whoever they may be in our lives!
And in the Book of Micah Chapter 7: 5&6, this is a good reminder that all of us should consider. Quote Micah 7:5. Do not trust in a friend; Do not put your confidence in a companion; and also guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom. 6 For a son dishonors a father, A Daughter rises against her mother, Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; *A man's enemies are the men or the people of his own household, Family, Or Clan. *In other words this may be someone who is in opposition with you, or you with them. *This may be someone who is in conflict with you, or you with them. *This may could be someone in which you have a broken relationship with, or them with you. *Or, this may be someone in which you have a dysfunctional or toxic relationship with, or them with you. And therefore, this could be with, a spouse. Or ex-spouse. a sibling. a child. a parent. a grandparent. a grandchild. an in-law. a relative. a friend. an associate. a colleague. a co-worker. a mentor or a mentee. a brother or sister in the body of Christ, or within your church family. or a leader within the body of Christ, or within your church family.
Therefore, let’s remember that here in Matthew 5: 44, that God’s ways are not our ways! So then, daily we need to request for ourselves, divine wisdom and patience. And the right attitude when it comes to these 4 action words love, bless do good and pray for which occur in rapid succession, that we are to implement when dealing with an enemy.
(Question) How “Tolerant” do you think you are with others, but especially when dealing with an enemy? (Repeat) Now, I have available upon request, I have a brief article on the topic of Tolerance from a biblical point of view.
“Understanding what the Bible says about tolerance is crucial for Christians today. Tolerance, as presented in Scripture, is a fundamentally different concept from the tolerance promoted in our society today. While the world advocates for a form of tolerance that demands, without judgment, the acceptance of all lifestyles and opinions as valid, the biblical perspective on tolerance is distinct. The Bible teaches that tolerance is not about accepting all behaviors or positions as valid but about extending patience, love, respect, and compassion toward those we may disagree with.
The Bible teaches tolerance as a virtue (Romans 15:5). Jesus Christ modeled the kind of tolerance He desired His followers to adopt and practice (Mark 9:38–40). Tolerance, from a biblical viewpoint, is the quality of forbearance. It means putting up with a person or a point of view even if we disagree (Ephesians 4:2). The verb tolerate means “to allow without opposing; to acknowledge the right of another to hold contrary opinions” (Grenz, S. J. and Smith, J, T., Pocket Dictionary of Ethics, InterVarsity Press, 2003, p. 120). Christians should seek to be as tolerant as possible so that the loving character of Christ will “shine out for all to see” (Matthew 5:16, NLT).
As Christ’s followers, we cultivate tolerance when we are prepared to love and accept people despite their different viewpoints. However, tolerance does not require Christians to defend or embrace ungodly or unbiblical viewpoints as valid or morally correct. Scripture plainly reveals that some lifestyles and behaviors are sinful and dishonoring to God. A faithful believer who desires to please the Lord and obey His Word will prioritize, maintain, and defend the truth, even when his or her convictions conflict with society’s expectations of tolerance (Acts 5:29).
Jesus did not condemn the woman caught in adultery but accepted her with grace and mercy (see John 7:53—8:11). At the same time, He did not ignore the fact that she was a sinner, nor did He encourage her to continue living in sin. Instead, Christ truthfully addressed her need, offering forgiveness and cleansing. Jesus told the woman to leave her life of sin and walk in a new life of holiness. A Christian can interact peacefully and gently with sinners and be as tolerant of them as possible. Still, he must never stop calling sinful behavior “sin,” nor should he encourage anyone to walk in a lifestyle of sin.
Tolerance is commended within the body of Christ. The apostle Paul wrote, “Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong” (Romans 14:1, NLT). Tolerance should be exercised when dealing with immature believers whose faith is weak (Romans 14:2–6; 13-22; 1 Corinthians 8:8–13). Rather than passing judgment on them and condemning them for their weakness, we should come alongside weaker brothers and sisters to help them (Romans 15:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; 1 Peter 4:8). We ought to live in such a way that we never cause a fellow believer to stumble or fall.
Jesus demonstrated to His disciples the need for tolerance with children (Matthew 19:13–14) and while serving one another (Mark 9:33–36). Paul encouraged ministers to tolerate other Christian workers, even when their motives might be wrong (Philippians 1:17–18).
The Bible places clear limits on tolerance. Evil and wickedness must never be tolerated (Habakkuk 1:13). There is no room in the church for false teachers or unsound, ungodly teachings (2 John 1:10–11; 2 Thessalonians 2:1–3; 1 Timothy 6:3–5, 20–21; 2 Peter 2:1). Sexual immorality and idolatry should not be tolerated in the body of Christ (1 John 5:21; 1 Corinthians 5:1–5, 11; 6:18–20; 10:7; Revelation 2:14).
Scripture instructs us to practice tolerance while never compromising the truth or relaxing God’s standard of holiness. This balance allows us to see people through the eyes of Jesus and perceive that they are lost, helpless sinners in want of His great compassion, mercy, grace, and forgiveness (Matthew 9:36; Mark 6:34). When we love people like Jesus does, selflessly, we can hear and see their unspoken needs, even if we don’t agree with them.
Now, see Luke 6: 31 And just as you want men to do unto you, you also do unto them likewise, or the same! 32 But if you (love) those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you (do good) to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most-High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore, be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. 37 Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. 38 Give or share and it will be given unto you! Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. Now, after hearing from our Lord Jesus in these 8 verses, from The Gospel of Luke, we should not be saying to The Lord, “I got This Jesus!”
Kind of like in Mark 10: 19 You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother. 20 And the young ruler answered and said unto Jesus, Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth. 21 Then Jesus looking at him and loved him, and said unto him, "One thing you lack:Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 22 But the young ruler was sad at these words and went away sorrowful for or because he had great possessions.
But instead, we should be saying if we know the Lord, help me Holy Spirit and fill me so that I might do all these commands and glorify my father in heaven, instead of my flesh on earth.
Now, let’s finish with Romans 12: 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends upon you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord. 20 Therefore, If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.
